For Jacob Roco, music is more than just a passion — it’s a life-defining journey. A sophomore at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Plano, Texas, Jacob was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Angelina’s Song for the 2024-2025 academic year. His story highlights the profound impact music can have, both as an art form and as a means of healing.
A Life Rooted in Music
“Music has always been a cornerstone of my life, shaping my experiences and guiding my career aspirations,” Jacob reflects.
From his first piano recital at four to playing percussion in band throughout school, music has been a constant companion.
“I enjoy music, and I love helping others. I didn’t realize I could combine both passions until I was introduced to music therapy,” he shares.
Jacob’s drive to make music therapy accessible is evident in his commitment to the field. At SMU, he was elected President-Elect of the Student Association of Music Therapy during his freshman year.
Building Community Through Music
Jacob’s dedication extends beyond academics. Recognizing the need for a musical community on campus, he founded the SMU Performers Collective, an organization providing performance opportunities for students of all majors.
The Collective has performed at SMU’s Midnight Market, holiday shows, and community events, fostering camaraderie and creativity.
“I saw the need to connect students using music as a medium. It’s been really cool to see the outcome of the community we’ve started to build,” he said. “We’ve built something special. Four bands have formed from this group, and the turnout has been awesome.”
A Multifaceted Talent
Jacob doesn’t limit himself to one path. A versatile performer, he plays percussion, piano, guitar, and sings. This semester he’s played in wind ensembles, orchestra concerts, and has entertained crowds during halftime shows with SMU’s Mustang Band.
His recent venture into songwriting led to the release of his first song, “Wish You Were Here with Me” in October 2024—a dream made possible after winning a free studio session.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime, cool experience,” he says. “I’m working on my craft and hope to produce my own songs in the future. One of my goals is to keep making music, keep making songs.”
Practical Experience in Music Therapy
This semester, Jacob has worked with a single client in his practicum, an immersive experience he describes as deeply rewarding.
“It’s been all the things—highs and lows—but I’ve become better for it,” he shares. His upcoming geriatric practicum, where he’ll work with older adults, excites him. “I’m looking forward to the new experiences and challenges.”
In addition to his practicum, Jacob conducts monthly music therapy sessions for children with special needs through a program called Night Owls, blending his academic training with his innate desire to help others.
Reflecting on the Scholarship
The support from Angelina’s Song has been pivotal in Jacob’s journey.
“I am truly, from the bottom of my heart, really, really grateful for the opportunity you have given me,” he says. “Your belief in me means more than words can express. I’ll carry this support with me as a reminder of the kindness that helped me chase my dreams.”
Jacob’s future aspirations include earning a board certification in music therapy and attending graduate school while working in healthcare. His long-term goal? To establish a private practice or pursue a PhD in Music Therapy.
“I am driven to ensure that music therapy is not just an optional treatment but a vital part of holistic health care, accessible to all who need it” he explains.
A Bright Future
Jacob’s fall semester has been a whirlwind of achievements and experiences, from performances and song recording to practicum experiences. As he balances academic, extracurricular, and personal growth, Jacob approaches each day with optimism and purpose.
An active student on campus, Jacob is involved with the Performers Collective, Rotunda Scholars, the Filipino Student Association, Catholic Campus Ministry, Student Association of Music Therapy, and much more.
With his talent, dedication, and passion for making a difference, Jacob Roco embodies the mission of Angelina’s Song: to inspire, uplift, and heal through music.
